Just south of Radstock in North East Somerset, there is a small woodland. This woodland is full of old growth trees and is classified as an ancient woodland.
Withing this woodland there is an area named ‘Home Wood’ which comprises of ancient British trees, English oak, and understory of Hazel, Field Maple, Hawthorn, Blackthorn but mainly consisting of Ash.
In Asia a fungal disease that is carried by the wind is native and the trees are resistant. But the wind carried this disease and in 2006 the first reported case of this disease was recorded in the UK.
Ash Dieback is a fungal disease that lands on the leaves of ash trees and makes its way inside, blocking off their water systems and spreading throughout eventually killing the tree entirely.
It is thought that we are only now starting to see the effects of this disease and over the next decade we will likely see up to 80% of our ash trees succumb to the fungus within the next ten to fifth teen years.
